"It starts with death..." Raised in a home with no TV, where Smurfs were demonic, Transformers were "the embodiment of lies," and knowledge was a sin, author Kethan Lee Anderson learned about death every week in church, but had only a limited glimpse of life. He becomes intimately familiar with death on his life's journey, disillusioned by the agonizing loss of precious pets and friends whose lives ended too soon.

Abandoned on the family farm without a vehicle, he is given all the responsibility for its care, with no transportation or support to do so. Eventually, the author says, "I just wanted to walk away from the good person that I thought I was and be something terrible for a change.".
