The focus is on short-term concerns: demilitarisation, issues related to human and collective security, and the post-conflict distribution of political power. Chapters centre on key explanatory factors influencing the volatile periods just before and after a war is terminated, when negotiation replaces fighting and when peace agreements are being hammered out and implemented, often in an environment of fear, mistrust and resource scarcity.
