As the Crow Flies: the Saga of Nora Hart
E. Kathleen Nelson
"As the Crow Flies, a Saga of Nora," takes place in the 1800s and early 1900s in communities called River Falls, River View, Jones Gap, Gap Creek and Oil Camp Creek in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern South Carolina and only a few miles apart as the crow flies. Those areas all just south of Henderson County, North Carolina are known today as only River Falls. Historical facts of the areas, where Nora Hart and members of her family witnessed history in its making and had a profound influence upon its impact, are revealed as the story unfolds. Nora, born in 1872, portrays a most unusual woman living on Oil Camp Creek Road in north western South Carolina. She works hard, "hard as a man," in every job that she undertakes. The sun doesn't always shine on her life, but her steps were never without hope. She grew up with seven smart and ambitious brothers, who like Nora, made a difference with their life. Nora married a young man from an influential family and has a family of nine children. Nora lost two young daughters early in her married life and her first born son in World War I, which drastically affected her. But her faith in God and her husband's love sustained her through those tragedies. As she always said, God never gives us more than we can bear.
