Only a single moment had elapsed, for the journey had been as swift as that of Mahomet to the seventh heaven mounted on Al Borak, but he seemed to have been away for hours. The discrepancy was to Montrose impossible to reconcile, even though he grasped confusedly the fact that he had been, in the Fourth Dimension say, where there is no time. In 1885 he emigrated to Melbourne, the city in which he wrote and set The Mystery of A Hansom Cab. In 1888 he settled in England and embarked on a literary career which produced over 130 novels. He died in 1932.
