First, Bear and his posse must face the outlaw gang of Dirty Salvatore, who besets their town with a British invasion; a group of bally chums determined to bring the civility of cricket to the Wild West. Then Bear has to deal with a bounty hunter who arrests Doc Tinkly's friend for horse theft. Tinkly and Deputy Rake (who'd do anything for her) sneak out to mount a rescue from neighbouring Townton: a lawless settlement with a penchant for hanging suspects without trial. Along the way, Tinkly suffers the effects of blue ice lollies, while Deputy Rake falls foul of the fictional folk hero Bandit-Man. In book 3, Grizzleton's bank is robbed by the Coyote Colt Kid and one of Bear's deputies faces the blame. Only the Kid's former lover, Grizzleton's priest Father Yarek, can provide any hope to clear the deputy's name. If you're still with us by this point, Deputy Rake and Doc Tinkly go to the circus while a mysterious lion-like stranger from Bear's past is determined to murder the poor sheriff.
