It was still called R&B in the 1950s, aka rhythm and blues. But by the time the 1960s rolled around, it had acquired a new name: soul music. The name reflected the music’s roots in gospel, and also the importance of vocal sincerity. If it didn’t sound like you really meant it, it didn’t have soul.
